As a board-certified dermatologist, one of the most common concerns I hear from Black mothers involves their pre-teen's or teenager's struggles with acne. Acne can take a heavy emotional toll and lead to lowered self-confidence and even depression if left untreated.
Without a personalized routine, acne can increase the risk of permanent scarring and discoloration without proper treatment.
I emphasize the importance of seeking early acne evaluation and care for pre-teens and teenagers. Here are the key benefits:
1. Prevent Scarring and Skin Damage
Those red, swollen acne lesions can do permanent damage. Acne scarring which can include pitting, indentations, and dark marks, is difficult (and costly) to treat. Early prescription medications and even over-the-counter treatments can stop this process and promote clearer skin.
2. Boost Self-Esteem and Confidence
Uncontrolled acne is psychologically devastating for many pre-teens and teens. Painful breakouts and visible scarring can trigger anxiety, social withdrawal, and poor self-image. Timely treatment helps clear the skin and complexion, promoting confidence and better emotional well-being.
3. Break the Acne Cycle
Leaving acne untreated can lead to a cycle of breakouts continuing well into adulthood. By starting comprehensive treatment during the pre-teen/teen years, we can interrupt this cycle and decrease the likelihood of adult acne.
4. Customized, Comprehensive Care
Effective acne treatment requires a personalized approach based on the individual's acne severity, type, skin type, and unique needs. Over-the-counter products require guidance to provide adequate responses and prevention of irritation of the skin. As a dermatologist, I develop customized regimens that combine prescription medications, therapies, and home care.
